Downtown Phoenix, Arizona, on July 18th, Shelly Denny and I went to a peaceful demonstration with the local Native American community which aimed to pray and honour the children who have disappeared in the American boarding schools at the end of the 19th century and during the 20th century. So far in both Canada and USA 2088 little body’s remains have been discovered in mass graves beside just only a few schools. Some of them have been identified and are being returned to their reservations.
Ce dimanche 18 juillet, avec Shelly Denny nous sommes allés dans le centre ville de Phoenix, Arizona, pour participer à un rassemblement pacifique organisé par la communauté Native Américaine pour prier et honorer les enfants disparus dans les internats Américains à la fin du 19ème siècle et durant le 21ème siècle. À ce jour, entre le Canada et les USA, les restes de 2088 petits corps ont déjà été retrouvés aux abords de quelques écoles seulement. Quelques uns furent identifiés et vont retourner dans leurs réserves pour y être inhumés.
When we have arrived, the attendees were waiting in front of the Chase Field Base Ball Stadium. A hundred of orange dressed activists, elders, allies, families, with different signs expressing the same idea: EVERY CHILD MATTERS.

The boarding and residential schools created by the Bureau of Indian affairs are sadly hiding an horrific truth summed up by the words of Capt. Richard H. Pratt’s “KILL THE INDIAN, SAVE THE MAN” during a speech delivered in 1892. The ideas expressed in Pratt’s speech are central to the development of the Carlisle Indian School (founded 1879) and other boarding schools across the country, which aimed to “civilize” and “Americanize” the Indian. The Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, opened in 1879 as the first government-run boarding school for Native American children.

When the group started to speak to the audience, a dude covered the voices yelling in a speaker his religious stuff, without any respect for the ceremony. Shelly was so upset that she jumped on him to ask him to stop immediately, followed by Patty Dimitriou, one of the members of the Medicine Wheel Ride organisation, a group of badass Native American women riders committed to raise awareness on the MMIW issue.

Fortunately the guy understood fast and the ceremony could go on peacefully. After a while the crowd crossed the street to finish on the other side in a more intimate way the gathering, singing and yelling the slogans prepared for the event. The representative Jennifer Jermaine, a restless advocate for the Native American communities in Arizona expressed in an emotional speak her profound commitment for revealing the truth on this terrible page of the American history.
Heureusement, le gars comprit rapidement et la cérémonie put continuer tranquillement. Après un moment la foule traversa la rue pour finir de l’autre côté plus intimement le rassemblement, chantant et criant les slogans préparés pour l’évènement. Jennifer Jermaine, une élue locale, infatigable défenseuse des communautés natives Américaines d’Arizona, exprima dans un discours émouvant son engagement pour que toute la vérité soit faite sur cette terrible page de l’histoire Américaine.
The peaceful protest ended with a spiritual song with the promise to continue the struggle until all the light will be done and all the stolen children are found and buried in a respectful and traditional way.
